Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the icons, indexes, and symbols in the story and miracles of Prophet Ismail (A.S.) in the Qur’an using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The background of this research is based on the need to understand Qur’anic narratives not only textually but also as systems of signs containing theological and symbolic meanings. The story of Prophet Ismail includes significant events such as the command to build the Kaaba, the trial of sacrifice, and the miracle of Zamzam water, all of which carry profound spiritual values. The theoretical framework applied in this study is Peirce’s triadic semiotic model, which classifies signs into icons, indexes, and symbols in relation to objects and interpretants. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with a library research design, utilizing data sources from the Qur’an, books, and academic journals. The results indicate that the icon appears in the command to establish the Kaaba; the index is reflected in the dream of sacrifice as a sign of faith testing; and the symbol is represented in the Zamzam story as a manifestation of sacrifice, struggle, and divine assistance. The name of Prophet Ismail appears twelve times across several surahs in the Qur’an.
